How does the NeoGen Plasma work?
As there should be behind all effective skincare and skin treatments, there is a robust science behind the technology that is the NeoGen Plasma. A handheld wand that uses plasma energy to non-surgically boost collagen production, tighten the skin, and reduce hyperpigmentation? That sounds too good to be true!
Trust us, it’s not. Here’s the science behind how the NeoGen Plasma works and why we’re obsessed with it.
Introducing the fourth state of matter…

Plasma energy in non-surgical treatments
Plasma particles are positively charged ions and negatively charged ions. Okay, so some science… Plasma energy generates thermal energy, or heat. It’s very conductive.
Nitrogen plasma, the energy that the NeoGen deals in, passes into the skin without cutting or breaking it because of this enhanced conductivity. It is conducted via water molecules in the skin, so the more hydrated your skin is the more effective penetration we can achieve.
Beneath the skin this heat is released in the Reticular Dermis, the deepest part of the middle layer of the skin before you reach subcutaneous fat cells.
This is where we find dense connective tissue, elastic fibers, and blood vessels – all the parts of the skin that aid with rejuvenation. Through the heating up of these connective tissues, the skin’s layers contract and tighten. This also encourages temporary vasodilation, or the widening of your blood vessels, to deliver enhanced bloody supply to the area to aid with this controlled wounding.
This helps to naturally heal the skin’s layers and to rejuvenate the epidermis which will soon surface. Through stimulating connective tissue tightening, collagen and elastin production, and improved bloody supply to the treated areas, we’re able to procure some beautiful results without ever breaking the surface of the skin.
What are the effects of plasma energy on the skin?
- Tightening loose skin – When the plasma energy is applied to the skin, thermal energy (heat) is released. This causes the immediate target area to heat up and the tissue at the different skin layers to contract. Once this is healed, you’ll enjoy tighter skin at more than just surface level.
- Skin resurfacing and smoothing – When applied at a higher strength, we can target the epidermis level with controlled plasma energy. This prompts the creation of a new epidermis which, after around 3-5 days, will replace the skin cells in the upper dermis above it. Your body will shed this skin to produce this new, smoothed, brighter epidermis.
- Skin regeneration and collagen production – By causing a light, controlled damage to the lower skin layers (again, similar to controlled wounds of microneedling), we can stimulate the healing and creation of fresh skin layers, collagen, and fibroblasts. Fibroblasts live a little deeper in your skin, but after NeoGen Plasma treatment they migrate to the lightly damaged to restore and regenerate the skin. This collagen and fibroblast production has been shown to continue for up to a year after treatment!
Are plasma skin treatments safe?
Yes, plasma skin treatments are perfectly safe when the right level of energy for your skin type, age, and desired results are applied.
- This treatment is non-invasive which means it does not break the skin’s surface. We don’t need to draw blood or otherwise in order to perform this treatment for you; this is no cutting or breaking of the skin.
- Treated skin forms a natural ‘bandage’ to aid healing and minimise infection risk. This is because the epidermis layer of skin always remains intact, acting as your own dressing after your treatment. Because the skin has not been broken and the healing cover is your own biological material, this drastically reduces infection risks and complications.
- The treatment strength and depth is tailored to your skin types and needs. High energy treatments can achieve fully ablative results with much less down time and risk of complications than other treatments on the market, and low energy treatments are still able to achieve beautiful skin improvements too.
- No eye guards, glasses, or specialist protection required because this is not a laser. One of the biggest benefits of NeoGen plasma is that it can achieve the results of CO2 laser treatments without using laser energy.
This final point is particularly remarkable; treating tired eyes means treating a very sensitive area. The skin around and below the eyelids is naturally thin, regardless of age and skin quality or level of skin damage. Not to mention, the eyes themselves! This makes treatments rejuvenating the eye area particularly popular, because they are capable of producing beautiful and safe results for such a delicate part of the face.
This also represents Pro Aesthetics’ expert techniques and treatment qualifications, as we can also perform tear trough filler and BeautifEye under eye treatments.
What does NeoGen Plasma treat?
- The entire skin surface!
- Dull skin tone and tired-looking skin
- Sun damage, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation
- Acne scarring
- Loose and thinning skin
- Loose, thinning skin and wrinkles around the eyes
- Fine lines and wrinkles
This treatment can treat darker skin tones, but only at a lower level. This is because darker skin tones have higher levels of melanin, so lower levels of energy are used to best avoid skin and pigmentation discolouration.
